NEW Leadership Illinois

NEW Leadership is a non-partisan, week-long residential program for college women designed to increase women's representation in all elements of public life, including elected office. The program challenges our brightest students tothink critically and creatively about public policy and encourages them to make a commitment to public leadership early in their careers.

NEW Leadership Illinois is a joint initiative of the Institute of Government and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois and the Conference of Women Legislators of the Illinois General Assembly.

The Institute of Government and Public Affairs serves society by helping to improve public policies and the performance of government. It does this by conducting research on public policy issues and the public decision-making process, and by facilitating the application and dissemination of research to those who confront policy issues.

The Conference of Women Legislators encourages female legislators from both sides of the aisle to work in a bi-partisan fashion to advance the interest of all women, children and families, through state, local and federal initiatives. As a non-profit organization, COWL does not take ideological positions on public policy issues, but rather serves as a forum for women legislators to be empowered through information and experience.

The Illinois program is part of the NEW Leadership Development Network. Sponsored by the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University, the Network includes 14 states and the District of Columbia.
